Shadowban check: what it means for an account you buy

"Shadowban" is the word buyers use for an account that still works but that other people stop seeing. You can post, reply and follow as usual; the posts just do not show up where they would for a healthy account. This guide explains what that means when you buy an account, what the check behind our No shadowbanned accounts listing looks at, and where its promise ends.

What a shadowban looks like

X does not publish a shadowban status and does not notify the account. What people describe under the name is a set of visibility limits, each one inferred from what other people can see:

  • Search ban — the account and its posts do not appear in search at all, even when someone searches for them directly.
  • Lower search ranking — the posts appear under Latest but not under Top, so an ordinary search misses them.
  • Reply deboosting — the account's replies are pushed out of sight in a thread, behind the fold where X keeps the replies it ranks low, for everyone except the account itself.

From inside the account nothing looks wrong. That is the problem for a buyer: an account can log in perfectly and still be close to useless for reach.

What our check looks at

Every account for the shadowban-free shelf is looked at from the outside — through a different account than its own — when it is added to the shop:

  1. Search. We search for the account and its posts under both Top and Latest. Missing from both is a search ban; missing from Top but present under Latest is a lowered ranking. Either one keeps the account off the shelf.
  2. Replies in a thread. We take a recent reply by the account and open the thread it belongs to as someone else. If the reply is hidden there, that is reply deboosting, and the account stays off the shelf.
  3. Only a clean result goes on the shelf. An account that passes both, with fewer than a thousand followers, lands on No shadowbanned accounts.

Accounts with a thousand followers or more go to +1k follower accounts, and accounts with a checkmark go to Blue accounts, whatever the result. Those listings, like the other follower tiers, are sorted by followers and badge — not by visibility.

What it does not guarantee

A check is only useful if you know its edges, so here they are.

  • It is a snapshot. The account is checked once, when it is added to the shelf, and is not re-checked while it waits for a buyer. Visibility can change between the check and your purchase.
  • The reply check needs a reply. An account with no recent reply to look at is judged on search alone.
  • It says nothing about the future. What happens after you take over — hundreds of follows in an hour, the same link posted again and again, a wave of reports — can bring limits back. Keeping a bought account safe covers the habits that, in our experience, avoid that.
  • It is not a reach guarantee. A visible account is one people can find; whether they engage depends on what it posts.
  • Our replacement rule is about credentials. As the terms say, an account whose details did not work at delivery, reported within 24 hours of revealing it, is replaced or refunded. Visibility is not part of that rule.

How to check an account yourself

You can repeat the basics from a second account of your own. Search for from:username under both Top and Latest and see whether recent posts appear. Then open a thread the account replied in and look for its reply without opening the hidden section. Third-party checker sites exist as well; in our experience their answers vary from day to day, so treat a single result as a hint rather than a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Does a shadowban-free account guarantee reach?

No. It means the account's posts and replies were visible to other people when we checked it. Reach then depends on what the account posts and how it behaves after you take it over.

Can an account be shadowbanned after I buy it?

Yes. The check is a snapshot taken when the account was added to the shelf. In our experience a burst of activity right after a change of owner is a common trigger, which is why we recommend going slowly for the first days.

Are the other listings checked too?

Only the No shadowbanned accounts listing is filled on the result of this check. The follower tiers, +1k and Blue are sorted by follower count and badge, so an account there comes with no visibility promise.
